Aims and Scope

Big.D is an international interdisciplinary journal dedicated to advancing design-enabled engineering, intelligent technologies, and sustainable systems. The journal provides a global academic platform for research that integrates engineering design with computational intelligence, advanced materials and manufacturing, environmental technologies, biomedical engineering, and human-centered systems.

Big.D emphasizes design as an engineering methodology for translating scientific knowledge and technological innovation into methods, materials, devices, processes, products, and systems. The journal welcomes research demonstrating engineering or technological novelty through modeling and optimization, quantitative analysis, prototype development, fabrication, experimental or numerical validation, and performance evaluation.

The journal welcomes original and interdisciplinary research in areas including, but not limited to:

  • Ecological and Sustainable Design Engineering, including eco-design, life-cycle engineering and assessment, circular design and engineering, sustainable materials and products, low-carbon technologies, resource efficiency, and sustainability-oriented optimization and decision support;
  • Artificial Intelligence, Computational Design, and Engineering Informatics, including machine learning, deep learning, computational modeling, optimization, multimodal data methods, digital twins, generative and AI-assisted design, knowledge-based systems, and data-driven engineering;
  • Intelligent and Human-Centered Systems, including robotics, intelligent control, autonomous and adaptive systems, human–computer interaction, human factors, user-state sensing, assistive technologies, intelligent environments, and technology-enabled human well-being;
  • Bio-Inspired Engineering, Advanced Materials, and Smart Structures, including biomimetic systems, functional and responsive materials, micro/nano engineering, flexible electronics, smart surfaces, and multifunctional material–structure systems;
  • Advanced Manufacturing, Sensing, and Wearable Technologies, including additive and digital manufacturing, computational fabrication, manufacturing optimization, flexible and self-powered sensors, electronic skin, smart textiles, and wearable and bioelectronic systems;
  • Biomedical, Rehabilitation, and Healthcare Engineering, including medical devices, biomedical robotics, intelligent prostheses and exoskeletons, rehabilitation technologies, digital health, physiological monitoring, AI-assisted healthcare, and personalized healthcare technologies;
  • Environmental, Energy, and Industrial Systems Engineering, including renewable energy, smart energy systems, water treatment, waste valorization, resource recovery, industrial ecology, circular systems, sustainable infrastructure, and environmental process optimization;
  • Engineering Design, Technology Innovation, and Responsible Systems, including engineering design methodology, systems engineering, design optimization, technology forecasting, digital transformation, intelligent service and organizational systems, human-centered technology innovation, explainable and trustworthy AI, value-aware engineering, and interdisciplinary frameworks supporting the design, evaluation, governance, and implementation of emerging technologies.

Big.D primarily publishes Original Research Articles, Review Articles, and application-oriented Case Studies. Contributions are expected to demonstrate a substantive contribution to engineering design or technological development through the development, analysis, implementation, or validation of a method, model, algorithm, material, device, process, platform, or system. Interdisciplinary studies incorporating design, management, behavioral, social, or philosophical perspectives are also considered, provided that they make a clear contribution to engineering design, technological innovation, intelligent systems, or the development and implementation of emerging technologies.
