Abstract

This issue of Big.D examines sustainable design-enabled engineering in African and resource-constrained contexts. Contributions address integrated water–energy management, renewable-powered treatment, rural microgrids, bioenergy, waste valorization, circular economy, digital transformation, and localized production. Together, the studies show that sustainability requires coordinated approaches linking technology, infrastructure, biological resources, and socioeconomic conditions. By combining technical innovation with resilience, accessibility, resource efficiency, and implementable development pathways, the issue demonstrates how interdisciplinary engineering can support more sustainable, inclusive, and locally responsive systems.
